Tulane Trash to Treasure Volunteer/Leadership Opportunities

Move-out time at Tulane is hectic. Not everything you need to pack can fit into a storage unit or a cardboard box, and as a result, Tulane students end up amassing piles and piles of reusable dorm and school supplies (like printers, mirrors, and furnitures) that end up in the trash!

But no more!

Tulane Trash to Treasure redirects these otherwise destined-for-dumpster dorm supplies and sells them back to students during move-in time in the fall at heavily discounted prices.

It’s win after win with Tulane Trash to Treasure!

Win: No more guilt about throwing away perfectly reusable items!

Win: Save on dorm room and school supplies next fall!

To help make a difference with our program, check out the opportunities below:

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Spring: We are looking for individuals to help move the donated items out of the dorm collection areas to the storage units. It doesn’t matter if you can stay only one day after your finals or two weeks – we want you! Everything has been arranged with housing, so all you’ll need to do is book a later trip home. Volunteers will maintain the collection areas during the three-week collection period as well as assist with advertising. Individuals with access to trucks or large cars will be INCREDIBLY useful.

Summer: Are you staying in the city over break or living nearby? Come help with our “summer sorting days,” where we’ll be organizing the items. Food is likely, great company will be found, music is guaranteed, and some crazy, fun, whacky items will arise from our piles!

Fall: Get clearance to move in early and help with the final sorting! We’re seeking volunteers who can help move items from the storage areas to the sale areas, as well as individuals who can help run the sale and assist in clean-up.

General volunteers can submit their information here.

LEADERSHIP POSITIONS

Social media manager: Your responsibilities will lie in managing our Facebook page, posting at least 3 times a week. You’ll also spearhead the creation of a Twitter account, if deemed necessary, and assist with marketing and advertising strategies both on- and offline.

Public relations manager: Your job is to get Tulane Trash to Treasure in both school and local newspapers, and you’ll be working with the administration to utilize on-campus advertising space.

Volunteer coordinator: Effectively communicate with and organize move-in and move-out volunteers. You’ll be responsible for creating a collection schedule and accountability system for volunteers in addition to managing T-shirt and food orders and their distribution.

Finance chair: Deal with our finances and the accounting of thousands of dollars in sales as well as any expenses that may arise.

Graphic designer: Your job is to help us create eye-catching logos, flyers, banners, and online advertisements for distribution across campus.

To apply for any of the aforementioned positions, send an email to abevis@tulane.edu including your year, your building/home location, the position in which you’re interested, any spring/summer/fall availabilities, applicable skills, and anything else you think we should know!
