—————– ABOUT THE LEGISLATION —————–
On November 20th, the Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) issued a Declaration of Emergency, adversely affecting the daily operation of abortion clinics throughout the state of Louisiana.
The proposed rules represent a complete overhaul of the regulations governing abortion services in the state. This 21-page piece of legislation places medically unnecessary regulations that intentionally make it impossible for clinics to stay open.
Although this “Declaration of Emergency” was issued in November, it has been kept from the public eye and has had zero public input. The New Orleans reproductive health community was kept out of discussion, and we and the women of Louisiana will be left to deal with the grave repercussions of this legislation.
These MANY restrictions include new and unnecessary licensing provisions that will require unfeasible modification of clinic properties, forced reapplication for licensing, and an inability to appeal assessments by the state that may thereafter revoke or suspend their license, to name only a fraction of the new requirements.
—————– BOTTOM LINE —————–
These restrictions were knowingly created with the intent of shutting down abortion providers that do not have the means to satisfy these needless requirements.
This is an example of the recent TRAP (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers) laws that have been plaguing the United States. Louisiana is ranked as the most pro-life state in the country, meaning that our LA legislators can easily make this a reality.
This legislation is urgent and has serious repercussions. It may even affect you and your friends and the New Orleans community.
