Maya Scripta and exploring Gamification as an Outreach Strategy

Summary

Memoria Witz: Over the last two years, Ruben has been working with colleagues from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala in developing innovative public outreach strategies. Their latest iteration is "gamification", the practice of transmitting specialized content to non-academics through games. To do so, they launched a memory-matching board game presenting Maya hieroglyphs and their translation, for people in Guatemala to learn some Classic Maya words and compare them to modern-day Maya languages. The project is kindly funded by the Taylor Center for Innovation (with two Alvarez and one Changemaker Catalyst awards) and the Mellon Fellowship for Community Engagement (through a two year fellowship and one sustainability grant).
