Libraries without Borders: US Program Development Internship

Created in 2007, Bibliothéques Sans Frontiéres (BSF; Libraries without Borders) is one of the leading NGOs working in culture- and knowledge-based development in the Francophone world. Working in more than 20 countries, BSF supports local initiatives by creating libraries, training librarians, distributing books, supporting local publishing, designing library networks, promoting cultural heritage, and reducing the digital divide. BSF is headquartered in Paris and has staff and volunteers stationed across France, the United States, Belgium, and Haiti. Libraries without Borders, the US branch, is now headquartered in New Orleans, LA and seeks to make an impact on literacy and access to information locally and nationwide.

Libraries without Borders is now seeking an intern to assist the US Director with the development of international and domestic projects, fundraising, and communications. Responsibilities include the following:

1. Coordination of projects and fundraising campaign

  • Creating the Digital Law Library, which will equip legal professionals in English-speaking countries with digital copies of case law, statues, and regulations needed to practice law effectively
  • Expanding library resources in New Orleans through digital and traditional media

2. Development of the visibility of BSF/LWB internationally

  • Develop the non-profit, for-profit, and government network of Libraries Without Borders in the US, Canada, and around the world through volunteer recruitment and event organization
  • Create communications and build awareness for the actions of BSF/LWB through Facebook, Twitter, and LWB’s English-language website

3. Administration

  • Assist the US Director and Treasurer with management of LWB’s finances and operations
  • Serve as a liaison between LWB and its board members when necessary

Required Qualifications:

  • Embraces the philosophy and values of BSF
  • Self-motivated and hardworking
  • Strong office skills (Microsoft Office, Internet)
  • Native-level English language skills
  • Excellent writing and project management skills
  • Enthusiasm

Desired Qualifications:

  • Mastery of web and graphic design software, social media channels
  • Internship experience
  • French language proficiency

The internship starts immediately and will last approximately six to twelve months. Interns are expected to work ten hours per week, mainly working remotely via laptop and phone.
