Last year, I attended Tulane’s inaugural LeaderShape Institute. Six days seemed like a large chuck of my valuable summer to devote to a leadership program, but I took the plunge and bussed over to Rosaryville with 59 other Tulane students.

The program (set up as an immersive experience similar to CELT-SI’s own Work on Purpose workshops) really pushed us to discover what we wanted out of life and taught us crucial leadership techniques to apply to our student organizations and to our lives in general. We each mapped out a vision to improve the communities we are a part of; these ranged from creating a club on Tulane’s campus (which FAST president Caroline Lutkewitte achieved!) to reforming the entire education system. The week is chock full of bonding experiences, notably the challenge course (which was totally up my alley), an evening when the program brings in celebrity speakers to talk about their own visions and network with the students, and spending time with your “cluster family,” which we would break into for small group discussion and activities.

The best part of this program was definitely the network it has established. I found some of my closest friends during this week, and our family clusters especially keep us accountable for bringing our visions to reality. Most of the participants were people I had never met before, so hearing their beliefs, visions, and feedback on my own vision really pushed me to grow personally and to discover what it is that I want to accomplished.
